“We pray for the big things and forget to give thanks for the ordinary, small (and yet really not small) gifts.” ~Dietrich Bonhoeffer
When was last time we thanked God for the everyday blessing that God grants us. I know that sometimes it is easier to thank God for those things that we have been praying about. When God answers prayers for those things we often are moved to tears followed by joy and often relief. We are thankful because these things are out of our own control. Almost always they are things only God could do.
But what about those things that I can “get” in our own strength? Or those things that just “are”? They’re in our daily lives, and we often don’t stop to thank God for them. These everyday blessings such as running water, electricity, a warm bed, a job just to name a few. These things that we take for granted are all answers to prayer. God is granting us these things without us even asking.
I was reminded of this, this week, as some of our students who returned from being On Mission with Quest told stories of the experiences. For me I am humbled by what God has given to me and my family. I find myself asking this question, “Am I doing all I can to live my life with a grateful heart and am I doing all I can to greater His Kingdom?”.
What if we sat down this week, just begin writing these blessings down, how long would our list be? This week find time to thank God for those little things!
